RICHARDSON, Texas – Fifth-seeded Texas-Tyler opened Friday's American Southwest Conference Quarterfinal game on a 21-2 run, and the Comets rolled to a 104-86 victory over the No. 4-seed Concordia University Texas men's basketball team at the UTD Activity Center.
Texas-Tyler (15-11) shot 60 percent (33-for-55) from the field en route to its first victory in the league's postseason tournament. Travis Dykman led five Patriots into double figures with a game-high 27 points. Joe Stephens added 26.
The Tornados (16-10) shot 44.6 percent (33-of-74) from the floor in the contest that ended their season.
Josh Sanchez poured in a team-best 26 points off the bench, while
Andre Potts scored 25.
Rashad Coleman posted 17 points in 30 minutes off the bench.
Following the initial spurt by Texas-Tyler, Concordia Texas was unable to get the deficit under double figures. The Tornados got as close as 10 points with 3:11 to play in the first half. However, the Comets held a 51-38 lead at halftime, and Texas-Tyler increased its advantage to as much as 22 in the second half.
The Comets will play top-seeded and 20th-ranked Texas-Dallas in the semifinals on Saturday.
