Tornados Overcome Cold Night, Edge Wildcats in Overtime

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's basketball team used an 11-4 overtime period to down Louisiana College 86-79 Monday afternoon at the Concordia Fieldhouse.

The Tornados (8-4, 3-1 ASC) closed out the extra period on a 11- 2 run after the Wildcats (2-6, 0-4) opened the scoring. CTX was nearly perfect at the line in overtime to help edge out the win.

Rashad Coleman helped the Tornado effort by going 15-of-18 at free throw line, including a perfect 4-of-4 in the extra frame. Coleman ended the night with 19 points and nine rebounds. Joshua Samuels led the CTX scoring with 22 points and was 8-for-16 from the field, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. Philip Meikle had 15 points in his second start of the season. He was 8-of-9 at the charity stripe.

The Tornados struggled all night from the perimeter, finishing the game with a 35.8 field goal percentage, but Concordia managed a 29-of-40 evening at the line, outpacing Louisiana at 21-of-39 at the stripe.

Both teams battled throughout the contest, producing 12 ties and 14 lead changes.

In the first half, the Tornados led by four with 2:18 to play, but the Wildcats pushed back to draw with three free throws. CTX went into the break up 37-36.

In the second period, the Tornados opened up a seven-point lead, but LC clawed back to tie the game at 48 with 15:06 to play. Eventually, Louisiana would use a 10-0 run to take a 54-48 advantage with 12:43 remaining. Concordia answered quickly with an 5-0 spurt spanning the next 60 seconds to bring the game back to a one-point spread. CTX would later use a 9-0 rally spanning nearly three minutes to take a 68-62 lead with 4:04 left.

The Tornados would hold the advantage until the Wildcats' Jacquez Coleman hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 73 with 35 seconds to play. During the next possession, Rashad Coleman went to the line and hit both free throws to put Concordia back on top with six seconds left. However, Timothy Stokes was fouled with one second left and hit both shots to send the game to overtime.

This was CTX's first overtime contest since Jan. 2, 2016, a game the Tornados won on the road at East Texas Baptist. Concordia has won its last seven straight overtime contests, a streak that dates back to Feb. 2, 2012.

CTX will resume play on Jan. 5 when they travel to LeTourneau.
