AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's soccer team, who return with six All-American Southwest Conference selections, including ASC First-Team honoree
Cayla Gonzalez, will look to get off on the right foot when they travel to Belton, Texas for their first two contests of the season.
The Tornados will face Texas Lutheran on Friday at 5:00 p.m. from the Cru Soccer Field and return to the pitch on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for a matchup with Southwestern.
Head coach
Lindsay Hanson, who is in her second year leading the program, is excited to see her upstart team compete.
"I look forward to building off of last year and continuing to grow and build this program," Hanson said. "We still have a lot to learn and we're a young program, however, we have quite a bit of talent and a lot to prove coming off of last season."
Concordia Texas will remain on the road for two more games, facing Schreiner on Sept. 5 and Our Lady of the Lake on Sept. 9.
The Tornados will open conference play on Sept. 13 at home, taking on LeTourneau from the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex. They will be looking to make their ninth straight ASC Tournament appearance.
In the ASC preseason poll, CTX was picked to finish seventh, while Gonzalez,
Delaney Kennedy and
Kaycee Moore were named to the Players to Watch list.
Gonzalez was influential in the Tornados' fast start last season, scoring six goals in three games as the team began the year with four straight wins. She finished the year with 10 goals, tied for the third-most single season goals in program history.
Moore, meanwhile, enters the season top 10 in career points and goals for the Tornados, sitting ninth with 24 points and ninth with 11 goals in her two years.
Kennedy will look to improve on her freshman season, where she appeared in all 17 games, notching two goals and three assists from her wing position.
Concordia Texas will celebrate its seniors with senior day on Oct. 18 against McMurry before closing out its home season on Oct. 20, when they take on 2017 Final Four participant and winner of the last 15 conference titles, Hardin-Simmons in Round Rock, Texas.
Hanson believes her team is prepared for the season.
"We had a great preseason and I'm excited to get started," Hanson said. "The girls have great attitudes and have shown that they are willing to do whatever it takes this year to press through and fight hard."
