BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas men's basketball team battled in a 95-92 loss on the road at #24 UMHB. Antoine Henderson posted a team-high 24 points, while Luis Gonzalez flirted with a triple-double inside the Mayborn Campus Center on Saturday.
The Crusaders raced out to a 13-2 lead. The Tornados responded when Gonzalez found Henderson for a layup that sparked a 15-2 run to give the tornados their first lead of the game at 17-15. Concordia's lead would grow to as much as seven points in the first half, but UMHB answered with a burst of their own to knot the game up at 28-28. Both teams would trade baskets throughout the remainder of the half as Gonzalez knocked down a three to give CTX a 44-40 lead heading into the break.
Concordia held a lead over the home team for the majority of the second half with a three-point make by Martinez giving them their largest lead of the second half at 74-67 at the 9:15 mark. The Tornados would continue to nurse their lead until the Crusaders finally tied the game at 89-all with 1:14 to force a Tornados' timeout. Out of the break, Jaylon Johnson found Adolfo Martinez in the corner for a three to give CTX the lead back.
UMHB converted a pair a free throws to fit the deficit to 92-91 with 38 seconds left. The Crusaders forced a turnover and scored a three-point play with 20 seconds remaining to go up by two points.With an opportunity to tie, Johnson's contested layup rimmed out. The Crusaders would split a pair of free throws, and Gonzalez almost banked in a running three-pointer as time expired as the Crusaders escaped with the win.
Concordia Texas will next return home to host LeTourneau University on Thursday, Jan. 26. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
