Junior Brent Schaekel of the baseball team is the 36th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. He is earning the award for the second time of his career.
Schaekel was named to the American Southwest Conference All-Tournament Team for the second straight season. The outfielder batted .500 by going 4-for-8 in the Tornados' two games against Texas-Tyler and Louisiana College. He also scored a team-high three runs, drew two walks, recorded one stolen base and did not commit an error in center field. Schaekel, who made the 2011 NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team, registered a .600 on-base percentage and slugged at a .500 clip in the two postseason games that were played at Texas-Tyler’s Irwin Field.
Schaekel, a business major from Houston, is the son of Joan and Bert Schaekel. He has two brothers, Kevin and John, and one sister, Deanna.
