Dominique Mayberry recorded 13 points and a season-high four steals, but the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team fell to Texas-Tyler by an 87-68 decision in American Southwest Conference action on Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Concordia Field House.
Texas-Tyler (3-3, ASC 2-1) did not allow Concordia to hit a field goal for almost five minutes after the opening tip and jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead. Mayberry drove in for a layup to cut the deficit to a single point, but Melissa Thomas drained a 3-pointer to keep the Patriots ahead the rest of the way. Olivia Burns made a pair of free throws to give the visitors a double-digit lead at 32-21 with 2:02 remaining before Lindsey Hausmann closed the half with a trifecta.
Leading 41-25 at the break, Texas-Tyler extended its lead to 22 points when Thomas sank two shots from the charity stripe. The Tornados, who forced their opponent to commit 38 turnovers, rallied and sliced the Patriot lead to 11 on a 3-pointer by
Kaleigh Landry which made it 70-59, but that was as close as they would come the rest of the way. Kristi Wallace made four free throws in the final minute to propel the visitors to a 19-point win.
In addition to registering 13 points and four steals, Mayberry dished out three assists and pulled down three rebounds to pace Concordia.
Alex O'Neal also finished with 13 points. Landry added 12 points by sinking four shots from long range. Texas-Tyler was led by Hausmann and Thomas. Hausmann finished with a game-high 17 points, while Thomas added 15. She'Cara Humphrey came close to a double-double with seven points and 10 boards.
Concordia (1-2, ASC 1-1) returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 4 when it hosts LeTourneau on Saturday at 1 p.m.
