Austin, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's and women's basketball teams will look to continue their recent success on the road in American Southwest Conference play when they visit Sul Ross State on Thursday, Jan. 27 and Howard Payne on Saturday, Jan. 29. Forever Video Productions is slated to webcast the action.
The Concordia men's team (10-7, ASC 8-5) has won four straight road games and enters the weekend in fourth place in the West Division after splitting its home games against McMurry and Hardin-Simmons last weekend. The Tornados were dealt a crushing 105-100 overtime defeat by McMurry before registering a 113-108 win over Hardin-Simmons. Concordia continues to lead the league in scoring offense, averaging 91.0 points per game, and has eclipsed the 100-point mark in three straight and five of its last six games. The team has recently been led by guards
Chris McDermott and
Tayler Jacobs. McDermott put together a career week, averaging 16.0 points on 64.7 percent shooting, along with 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocked shots during the homestand. He has bumped his scoring mark up to 8.3 points per game. Jacobs, who had 33 points in the Hardin-Simmons win, averages a team-best 14.4 points per game. He ranks fourth in the league in assists (4.2 pg) and free throw percentage (.844).
Josh Johnson scores at an 11.5 clip and is fourth in the ASC in blocked shots, redirecting 1.5 per contest.
Concordia's women's squad (9-7, ASC 8-5) has already won more conference games than last season enters the week in third place in the West Division. Despite having their six-game winning streak snapped by Hardin-Simmons last Saturday, the Tornados are looking to make their first ASC Tournament appearance in six years and are still very much in the running to host the conference tournament at the end of February.
Shamika Singleton, who ranks third in the league in points (16.3 pg) and fourth in rebounds (9.4 pg), has registered two straight double-doubles and seven overall this season to pace the squad.
Tiesha Martin, one of the most versatile players on the team, is coming off a career-best 17-point effort against Hardin-Simmons. She also played a major role in limiting All-American center Lindsey Newcombe to just seven points and seven boards. Concordia has continued to rely on its depth for success, as 10 of the 13 players are averaging at least 10 minutes of playing time in each contest. The squad had a 46-24 advantage in bench points in the McMurry game and outscored Hardin-Simmons' bench, 31-14, two days later.
Margaret Milling has been the biggest spark, averaging a league-best 3.1 steals per game while scoring at a 6.6 clip.
Sul Ross State's women's team (0-17, ASC 0-13), has lost 23 games in a row dating back to last season. All of the setbacks have come by double figures. The Lobos, who have been outscored by an average margin of 36.1 points per game in conference play, are sparked by the play of Madalyn Lopez and Candace Pollard. Lopez, a sophomore guard, scores at a team-leading 10.8 clip. She also grabs 5.9 boards per contest. Pollard adds 8.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and a team-best 0.6 blocks per contest. The freshman guard has led the team in scoring over the past three games, averaging 16.3 during the span. Sophomore guard Shaquana Wall contributes 4.4 points and 2.0 assists per game. The Lobos will be looking to win their first game since defeating Schreiner by a 60-53 decision on Jan. 30, 2010.
The Sul Ross State men (7-10, ASC 6-7) enter Thursday night's action tied for sixth place, but they are only two games behind Concordia for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Lobos, who have dropped three of their last four, are led by Jimmy Martinez. The senior guard averages 17.2 points and 2.1 steals per game. Both marks rank fifth in the league. Percy Little, a freshman forward, accounted for 17.5 points and 10.0 boards last week. He ranks second on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg) and is also the Lobos' top rebounder (7.4 pg) and shot blocker (0.4 pg). Another notable contributor has been senior guard Travis Johnson, who adds 8.6 points and 3.6 assists per game. His assists mark is fifth in the league, while he is also one of the league's best 3-point shooters. Johnson shoots 42.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Winners of a league-best seven games in a row and 10 of their last 11, the Howard Payne women (12-5, ASC 9-4) are the hottest team in the conference right now and have not lost since falling to Coe by a 61-50 score on Dec. 29 at the Concordia Field House. Brittany Roberson, a Temple Junior College transfer and candidate for the league's newcomer of the year award along with the Tornados' Singleton, has been leading the charge during the Yellow Jackets' winning streak. She averages 12.8 points and 3.3 assists, both team highs, as well as 4.9 rebounds this season. Her assists mark is third in the conference. Senior guard Katy Sarem averages 12.6 points and is shooting 44.9 percent from long range, a mark which ranks second in the league. Other notable players that pace the team's balanced attack include senior forward Clarissa Krum (9.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg), freshman center Kalin Hanna (2.1 bpg) and junior guard Jasmin Thomas (1.9 spg).
Howard Payne's men's squad (4-13, ASC 3-10) finds itself in the cellar of the standings, having dropped seven straight contests. The Yellow Jackets most recently lost an 83-82 decision to Schreiner last Saturday despite junior guard Brandon Irwin's 32-point explosion. Irwin has been the big bright spot for the Yellow Jackets, averaging 17.8 points per game. The mark ranks fourth in the league. Donovan Gardner, a freshman guard, also scores in double figures (14.4 ppg), while freshman forward Joshua Dada scores at a 7.9 clip and ranks fifth in the ASC with 1.5 blocks per game.
