11/14/2013 1:00:00 PM

AUSTIN, Texas – Concordia University Texas will open its 34th season of competition on Friday night when it hosts crosstown foe Huston-Tillotson. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Concordia Fieldhouse. Prior to the contest, last year's squad will be honored in a ceremony on the court for capturing the 2013 American Southwest Conference (ASC) Tournament title.

The Tornados are coming off a historic season. Concordia Texas posted a 24-6 overall mark, won its first conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32. The squad, which ranked second in the country in scoring average (94.0) a year ago, welcomes back nine letter winners and two starters – senior forward Dwayne Patterson and junior guard Josh Sanchez.

Patterson was named the 2013 ASC West Division Player and Newcomer of the Year. The Long Beach, Calif., native, who was tabbed a preseason honorable-mention All-American by two media outlets recently, averaged 17.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per outing.

Meanwhile, Sanchez was tabbed the 2013 ASC Tournament Most Valuable Player and collected honorable-mention All-ASC West Division honors. The Houston native averaged 14.6 points and 3.2 assists per contest a year ago.

The Rams (0-2) have dropped their first two games against NCAA Division I opponents. Huston-Tillotson fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 79-45, last Friday, and was dealt a 94-62 setback by Texas-Pan American on Wednesday night. Junior guard Terry Johnson is averaging 21.5 points per game to pace the Rams.

Friday's meeting is only the fourth between the two teams, which are separated by 22 miles, since Concordia made the move to Division III. The Tornados hold a 2-1 edge in the all-time series, but Huston-Tillotson posted a 116-102 victory in the last matchup on Nov. 15, 2008.
