AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's basketball team will begin its quest for back-to-back American Southwest Conference (ASC) championships with a challenging road trip this weekend. The Tornados will square off with Louisiana College at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, at H.O. West Fieldhouse in Pineville, La., before playing Mississippi College at 7:30 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton, Miss., two days later.
Concordia Texas (2-0) will look to continue to ride its high-octane offense this weekend in league action. The Tornados, who rank second in the nation with 112.0 points per game, won their second consecutive game with a 95-80 victory over Schreiner on Tuesday night.
Dwayne Patterson netted his second straight double-double after scoring 36 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The senior forward also fueled a 20-6 run over the final five minutes by scoring 10 points to help Concordia pull away.
Patterson ranks second in the country with 37.0 points per outing. The Long Beach, Calif., native also leads the team with 11.5 rebounds per contest and is shooting 89.3 percent (25-of-28) from the free-throw line.
Josh Sanchez (20.0),
Brett DeMetrotion (12.0) and
Andre Potts (12.0) also are averaging double digits for the Tornados.
The Wildcats (0-1) have not played since dropping an 85-74 decision at Centenary (La.) last Saturday. Anthony Gaines posted a double-double of 24 points and 12 boards in the season opener, while Kevin Cottonham scored 20 points.
The Choctaws (2-0) have earned a pair of non-conference victories over Pensacola Christian (73-61/Nov. 16) and Rust (88-81/Nov. 26) to open the campaign. Lakin Ford is leading the team in scoring (16.5) and rebounding (9.5) through the first two contests, while Jay Case is averaging 11.0 points per game.
Saturday marks the 17th meeting between Concordia and Louisiana College. The Tornados own a slim 9-7 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to the 1983-84 season. Concordia has won seven of the last eight contests against the Wildcats, including an 85-81 victory in Pineville last December.
Meanwhile, Monday will be the 18th matchup between the Tornados and Mississippi College. The Choctaws are 12-5 in the all-time series, but Concordia has won four of the last six meetings, including a 78-76 decision in last year's ASC Tournament quarterfinals in Richardson, Texas.
