AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's basketball team will put a six-game home winning streak on the line this weekend when it hosts a pair of American Southwest Conference (ASC) opponents. The Tornados will face Howard Payne at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday before taking on Sul Ross State at 3 p.m. two days later.
Concordia Texas (3-1, 1-1 ASC) netted a 93-83 victory at Mississippi College on Monday night.
Josh Sanchez poured in 30 points, including 20 in the second half, to lead the Tornados to their first conference victory of the season.
Concordia ranks third in the nation with an average of 100.8 points per game.
Dwayne Patterson leads the league with 25.5 points per game, while Sanchez sits in fourth at 20.8 per outing. Patterson, who has racked up three double-doubles this season, also is tied for the conference lead with 10.5 boards per contest.
The Yellow Jackets (0-4, 0-3 ASC) are still in search of their first win of the campaign. Howard Payne have lost two league tilts to the Lobos and another to Texas-Dallas. With an average of 74.8 points per game, the Yellow Jackets rank fifth in the league.
Brandon Gould is the conference's second-leading scorer, behind Patterson, at 23 points per contest. Christian Davis paces the club with 6.7 rebounds per contest and third with 10.3 points per game.
Sul Ross State (3-2, 2-0 ASC) has won three consecutive games, including a pair of league tilts against Howard Payne. The Lobos are averaging 72.8 points per contest, which ranks ninth in the ASC, and giving up only 67.6 points per game.
Three players are averaging double figures for Sul Ross State, including Percy Settle, who ranks eighth in the league at 18.6 points per outing. Mychal Pinson (14.2) and Darrell Gardner (11.2) are the other two top scorers on the team.
Thursday marks the 36th meeting between the Tornados and Yellow Jackets with Concordia holding a 21-14 advantage in the all-time series. The Tornados have won eight consecutive tilts, including a 113-87 victory on Feb. 16, 2013, in Austin.
Meanwhile, Concordia and the Lobos will be squaring off for the 37th time on Saturday afternoon. The Tornados hold a 23-13 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1983. CTX, who has won five straight against Sul Ross State, posted a 116-91 win in the last meeting on Feb. 14, 2013.
