AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's basketball team will open a four-game American Southwest Conference (ASC) road trip at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Hardin-Simmons. The Tornados also will face Texas-Dallas at 3 p.m. two days later.
ABOUT CONCORDIA TEXAS
• The Tornados (10-3, 8-3 ASC) have won seven of their last eight games and currently sit in third in the league standings.
• Concordia registered a 104-94 victory over Texas-Tyler last Saturday.
• CTX is 4-2 in road games this season.
• In the last six games, the Tornados have trailed only 9 minutes and 11 seconds in the second half and overtime periods, out of a possible 125 minutes.
• CTX leads the ASC and ranks fifth in the nation in scoring average (92.8 ppg).
• The Tornados lead the country with 304 made free throws.
• Concordia ranks seventh in the nation in free throw attempts (403) and eighth in total assists (238) and assists per game (18.3).
• Junior guard
Josh Sanchez leads the conference and ranks 19th in the nation in scoring average (22.3 ppg). The Houston native has registered double figures in 12 of the 13 games this season, and he has netted 20 or more points eight times, including a season-high 36 in last Saturday's game against the Patriots.
• Senior forward
Dwayne Patterson is the second-leading scorer in the league at 21.2 points per game. The Long Beach, Calif., product also leads the ASC in steals (3.2) per game and ranks second in rebounds (9.2) and sixth in assists (4.1) per outing.
• Concordia is one of only two teams in the nation to have two players that average 20 or more points per game (Sanchez, 22.3/Patterson, 21.2). Sixth-ranked Amherst is the other (Connor Green, 21.8/Aaron Toomey, 21.3).
• Senior guard
Jonathan Garza ranks third in the conference in assists (5.0) per game.
• Junior forward
Brett DeMetrotion leads the ASC in field goal percentage (.663).
• In the past two games, junior guard
Andre Potts is averaging 20 points and shooting 54.5 percent from behind the three-point line.
ABOUT HARDIN-SIMMONS
• The Cowboys (6-6, 6-3 ASC) have won five consecutive games and sit only one-half game behind the Tornados in the ASC standings.
• Hardin-Simmons is 2-4 at home this season, with both victories coming in the new year.
• The Cowboys ranks ninth in the ASC in scoring average (73.2 ppg), third in scoring defense (71 ppg) and second in steals (9.9) per game. The squad also leads the conference in blocked shots (61 overall/5.1 bpg).
• Derrick Jefferson leads HSU in scoring average (17.1 ppg) and rebounds (8.2) per game. He also ranks third in the conference with 2.3 steals per contest.
HARDIN-SIMMONS SERIES NOTES
• Thursday marks the 30th meeting in the all-time series, with Concordia holding a 16-13 advantage.
• The Tornados have won six of the last seven meetings, including a 101-67 decision in the last matchup (Feb. 2, 2013).
ABOUT TEXAS-DALLAS
• The Comets (10-1, 8-0 ASC) currently sit atop the conference standings, two games clear of second-place Louisiana College in the loss column.
• Texas-Dallas also has won five consecutive contests.
• The Comets lone loss this season was a 63-58 setback at Trinity on Dec. 10.
• UTD will face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday night in Richardson before facing the Tornados.
• The Comets boast the top defensive team in the league, holding opponents to an average of only 61.8 points per game.
• Texas-Dallas, which averages 75.1 points per outing, also leads the ASC in scoring margin (+13.3), free throw percentage (.783), field goal percentage (.468), opponents field goal percentage (.397) and rebounding margin (+7.9).
• Preseason ASC Player of the Year Kyle Schleigh ranks eighth in the league in scoring average (17 ppg), fourth in rebounds (8.5) and blocked shots (1.6) per game.
• Nolan Harvey is the top free throw shooter in the circuit, knocking down 86.4 percent (38-for-44) of his attempts at the charity stripe.
TEXAS-DALLAS SERIES NOTES
• The two teams will meet for the 19th time in the all-time series on Saturday.
• Texas-Dallas owns a 10-8 edge over the Tornados.
