Patterson's big second half helps Tornados edge Hardin-Simmons, 76-74

ABILENE, Texas –
Dwayne Patterson scored all of his 20 points in the second half, and the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team picked up a 76-74 victory over Hardin-Simmons on Thursday night at the Mabee Complex.

Patterson was held scoreless in the opening half after playing only two minutes due to picking up two quick fouls. However, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound forward knocked down seven shots, including one from beyond the arc, and hit five free throws to nearly reach his season scoring average.

The Long Beach, Calif., native also grabbed 10 rebounds and earned his seventh double-double of the campaign.

Josh Sanchez carried the Tornados (11-3, 8-3 ASC) in the opening half scoring 15 points. The Houston product registered his second career double-double with a game-high 27 points and 11 boards. Sanchez was 8-of-13 from the field, including 5-for-9 from downtown. He also hit 6-of-11 free throws.

Concordia Texas trailed 73-72 with 1:05 to play, but Patterson was fouled and hit both free throws to help CTX regain the lead.

Patterson picked up a steal on the ensuing inbound and scored a layup to push the advantage to 76-73.

The Cowboys (6-7, 6-4 ASC) managed only one free throw in their final two possessions.

Titus Mims logged a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace Hardin-Simmons.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Concordia has won eight of its last nine games.
• The Tornados held a 33-31 lead at halftime.
• CTX fell behind only once in the second half for a total of 25 seconds. Over the last seven games, Concordia has trailed only nine minutes and 36 seconds in the second half and overtime combined, out of a total of 145 minutes.
• Josh Sanchez grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, which set a career high for the junior guard. His previous career mark was seven, which was set against Howard Payne on Jan. 24, 2013.
• Dwayne Patterson netted 20 points on Thursday night. It marked the ninth time this season that he has scored 20 or more points in a game.
• Adam Whitlock netted 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a season-high 37 minutes of action. The junior guard is averaging 12.5 points and nine rebounds in his last two games.
• Concordia connected on 11-of-23 3-pointers against Hardin-Simmons, which came out to 47.8 percent – the Tornados' second-highest 3-point percentage this season.
• The 74 points scored by the Cowboys is the second-lowest output allowed by CTX this season.

Concordia continues its road trip with a stop at league-leading Texas-Dallas on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center in Richardson.
