AUSTIN, Texas – Riding a four-game winning streak, the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team will be back in action this week to close out a season-long, four-game home stand. The Tornados will match up with East Texas Baptist at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday before squaring off with LeTourneau at 3 p.m. two days later.
Concordia Texas (15-4, 12-4 ASC) remained in a second-place tie in the American Southwest Conference standings following an 83-80 victory over Louisiana College last Saturday. The Tornados are three games behind league-leading Texas-Dallas for the top spot and the right to host the ASC Tournament at the end of the month.
Josh Sanchez (21.6 ppg) and
Dwayne Patterson (20.4 ppg) rank as two of the top three leading scorers in the conference. Sanchez remained at the top of the scoring race after dropping 33 in Concordia's win over the Wildcats. Meanwhile, Patterson sits in third and ranks second in the league in rebounding (9.9 rpg).
The Tigers (7-11, 5-10 ASC) have won two of their last three games, including an 84-70 victory over Ozarks last Saturday. East Texas Baptist, which is currently tied for the final playoff spot, is led by Erby Thompson (11.9 ppg) and Jamil Samuel (9.8 ppg/8.4 rpg).
The Tornados topped the Tigers in their last meeting. Concordia outlasted East Texas Baptist in overtime, 88-78, on Jan. 4, in Marshall.
Meanwhile, the YellowJackets (4-14, 3-12 ASC) snapped a four-game skid last Saturday by knocking off Texas-Tyler, 94-82. Ladaria Brown averages a team-best 15.8 points per game, while Justin Jones is scoring 14.8 points per contest and is leading the conference in rebounding (10.7 rpg).
The Tornados netted a 77-69 win over LeTourneau in the last matchup between the two squads on Jan. 2, in Longview. Concordia had four players score in double figures, while Patterson logged a double-double.
