Austin, Texas - The Concordia University Texas men's and women's basketball teams are gearing up to host Texas-Tyler on Thursday, Dec. 2 and LeTourneau on Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Concordia Field House. Fans can also follow the games through a live webcast being administered by Forever Video Productions.
The Concordia women (1-1, ASC 1-0) rallied to defeat East Texas Baptist, 70-56, on the road in their conference opener on Saturday, giving first-year head coach Rusty Rainbolt his first career victory. The Tornados, who only return five letterwinners from last season, have been led by junior transfers
Dominique Mayberry,
Shamika Singleton and
Tiesha Martin through the first week. Mayberry, a guard, averages 12.0 points and is tied for second in the league with 3.0 steals per game. Singleton, who contributed 18 points and 13 rebounds in the victory over the Tigers, is averaging 11.0 points and 10.0 boards. Forward
Tiesha Martin has added 8.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this season.
The Texas-Tyler women (2-3, ASC 1-1), who were predicted to finish fourth in the American Southwest Conference East Division, have played a grueling schedule which has included two NCAA Division I and II opponents. The team most recently earned its first league win by defeating McMurry, 74-67, on Monday evening. Senior guard Melissa Thomas has led the way for the squad by averaging a team-best 16.4 points per game. Paige Parrish, who made the All-ASC East Division First Team last season as a freshman, scores at a 13.6 clip, while Lindsey Hausmann, the squad's floor general, ranks second in the league with 4.3 assists per game.
The LeTourneau women (0-3, ASC 0-2), who will first face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday night, were picked to finish seventh in the East Division. The YellowJackets have opened up conference play with a pair of losses to McMurry, 59-50, and Hardin-Simmons by a 71-62 score. Senior guard La'Queda Davis is the top offensive threat and leads the team in scoring (14.7 pg) and rebounding (5.0 pg), while freshman point guard Jessica Manas has made a quick impact, adding 8.7 points and 2.3 steals per contest.
The Concordia men (1-2, ASC 0-1) are looking to break out of a two-game skid after opening the 2010-11 campaign with a convincing 99-71 win over Southwestern in their season opener at the Concordia Field House on Nov. 19. The squad has had nine different players score in double figures in at least one game. Sophomore guard
Tayler Jacobs, who averages 11.0 points and a team-best 3.7 assists, is the only player to net at least 10 points in all three contests. After averaging 1.7 points and 2.3 rebounds as a freshman last season, sophomore forward
Darien Harris is already accounting for 12.0 points and 10.7 boards per game this year. He has registered a double-double in the last two games. Sophomore guards
Larry Durand and
Nick Haynes are coming off strong performances against East Texas Baptist, netting 16 points apiece in the 101-95 loss.
The Texas-Tyler men (2-4, ASC 1-1), who were picked fourth in the ASC East Division Preseason Poll, are coming off a jaw-dropping 74-56 overtime victory over McMurry. The Patriots, who were down 20 points in the second half, rallied to tie the score at 51 to force overtime before outscoring their opponent, 23-5, in the five-minute extra session on Monday evening. Junior guard Brandon Levine has led the offense and averages a team-best 10.7 points per game, including 25.5 in conference play. Jacob McDonald, another junior guard, scores at an 8.2 clip, while senior guard Michael Johnson, the team's floor general, averages 7.7 points and 2.7 assists per game.
The LeTourneau men (1-4, ASC 0-2), who were selected to finish sixth in the ASC East Division in the preseason, have had to make up for the loss of three graduated players who garnered ASC postseason recognition last year. Kendrae Carter and Jace Williamson have stepped up to fill the void left by a talented senior class. Carter averages 13.8 points and 6.4 rebounds, both team highs, and Williams is contributing 8.2 points per game.
