BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas –
Shamika Singleton scored a game-high 24 points and
Lashanda Luckey added a season-best 13 in leading the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a 63-50 victory over Goucher at the CTX Holiday Classic on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at the Concordia Field House. The Tornados, who never trailed in the game, built up a 23-point lead in the first half and didn't looked back.
Goucher (0-8), which trailed 41-20 at the break, attempted to rally by scoring the first eight points and 11 of the first 13 to start the second half. Precious Kollock and Kiara Doughty combined for seven points to spark the run before Singleton and
Skylar Lott each made jumpers to bring the Tornado lead back up to 47-31 at the midway point of the stanza.
The Gophers trimmed the deficit down to seven thanks to a pair of free throws by Sharnell Huff with 7:02 on the clock, but that was as close as they would come the rest of the way. A free throw by
Dominique Mayberry in the waning seconds sealed the final outcome.
Concordia (3-4) started off the game on fire from three-point range, canning its first three shots from downtown. Luckey drilled two of them, including one from the right arc on the Tornados' first possession of the game. The hosts went ahead by double figures for the first time when Mayberry hit a trifecta to her team a 19-7 advantage at the 12:59 mark.
After the midway point of the first half Singleton fueled a 13-2 Tornado run by making four field goals during the stretch to extend the lead to 36-13 with five minutes left to go in the first half. A tip-in by Goucher's Hannah Brown closed out the scoring heading into the recess.
In addition to netting 24 points on 12-for-22 shooting, Singleton registered eight rebounds and a blocked shot to lead the way for Concordia. Luckey had 13 points and five boards, while Mayberry added eight points.
Tiesha Martin pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds. Goucher was paced by Kollock and Huff. Both players contributed 12 points.
Concordia wraps up tournament play when it hosts Coe tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. The Kohawks registered a 61-50 victory over Howard Payne earlier in the day.
