BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas – Kayla Waskow scored a game-high 17 points and made a turnaround jumper with 9.3 seconds remaining in regulation as Coe edged Concordia, 69-67, in the CTX Holiday Classic on Thursday, Dec. 30 at the Concordia Field House.
With the game deadlocked at 67 points apiece, Concordia had the ball with 42 seconds remaining and a chance to take the lead for the first time in the second half. However, Kaitlin Breitbach stole the ball away from
Dominique Mayberry near the right sideline to allow the Kohawks to have possession with 32 seconds left in regulation. Sarah Anciaux then found Waskow in the paint for the eventual game-winning bucket, as
Lashanda Luckey's desperation attempt on the other end fell short of the basket as time expired.
In the first half, Coe used the long ball to jump out to a 12-6 advantage in the opening minutes. Kayla Lincoln made two shots from long distance during the stretch.
Concordia responded with a 9-1 run to take its first lead of the game. Mayberry nailed a jumper before dishing out assists to Luckey and
Tiesha Martin to spark the comeback. A layup by Martin at the 11:07 mark put the Tornados ahead by a 15-13 score.
After the teams exchanged leads several times, Concordia took control and went ahead, 37-30, thanks to six straight points by
Shamika Singleton. Coe responded by scoring the last eight points of the stanza, capped by Leslie Ware's trifecta which gave her team a 38-37 lead at the recess.
Beginning with a 3-pointer by Anciaux on the opening possession of the second half, Coe was able to maintain its lead that it would never surrender in the second half. But the Tornados kept chipping away at the deficit to set up the gut-wrenching finish.
Trailing 65-60 with under six minutes to play, Concordia tied the ballgame by getting a 3-pointer from Luckey and a layup by
Skylar Lott following a missed jumper by Singleton. Waskow answered with a layup on the Kohawks' next possession to put her team ahead by two before Singleton created a 67-all tie with 3:16 left.
Singleton, who averaged 22.5 points in the tournament, netted 21 on 7-for-12 shooting while adding five rebounds to pace Concordia in the losing effort. Luckey added 13 points for the second straight game to go along with four assists, while Martin registered her first double-double of her Tornado career with 10 points and 12 boards. Waskow led four Coe players in double figures and also added four assists. Lincoln and Anciaux contributed 15 points apiece, while Anciaux also had four helpers.
Concordia (3-5), which has been handed its last three losses by teams listed in the national polls, resumes American Southwest Conference action when it visits Mary Hardin-Baylor on Monday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
