Austin, Texas – After registering convincing victories over LeTourneau, the Concordia University Texas men's and women's basketball teams will continue American Southwest Conference play on the road against Louisiana College on Thursday, Dec. 9 and Mississippi College on Saturday, Dec. 11. Forever Video Productions is scheduled to webcast the Louisiana doubleheader, while the twinbill against Mississippi will have a live audio broadcast available for fans who can't make the trip.
The Concordia women (2-2, ASC 2-1) went 1-1 at home this past week, dropping a tough 87-68 decision to Texas-Tyler before responding in a big way by routing LeTourneau, 96-51, two days later. The Tornados forced the YellowJackets to commit 50 turnovers and converted them into 61 points. The team continues to be led by junior transfers
Shamika Singleton and
Tiesha Martin. Singleton, who has two double-doubles, averages 10.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, while Martin accounts for 8.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.8 assists as one of the most versatile players on the team.
Dominique Mayberry, another junior transfer, leads the team in scoring (11.3) and ranks second in the ASC in steals (3.3 pg).
The Louisiana women (6-0, ASC 4-0), the reigning ASC Tournament Champions, are receiving votes in the national polls and won both of their games this past week after learning the news of the death of head coach Janice Joseph-Richard, who fought a courageous battle against breast cancer. Preseason All-American Tillisha Givens, who was recently named the East Division Player of the Week after averaging 22 points and eight rebounds in two Wildcat wins, leads the way and accounts for a league-best 18.0 points per game and 10.2 rebounds, a mark which ranks second in the ASC. The conference's top-ranked scoring offense has four other players scoring in double figures, including sophomore swing player Natosha Gottlieb (13.3 pg) and senior guard Kayla Guidry (12.5 pg).
The Mississippi women (8-0, ASC 4-0) were picked to finish second in the East Division behind Louisiana and are also receiving votes in the national polls. The team has been paced by Jennifer Wair and Jaleesa Taylor. Wair, a senior forward who scores at a 14.9 clip and grabs 7.9 rebounds per contest, has been named to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week this season. Taylor adds 12.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 steals. The senior forward is coming off a strong week in which she poured in an average of 14.5 points in a pair of victories.
The Concordia men (3-2, ASC 2-1) are riding a two-game winning streak after dropping their ASC opener on the road to East Texas Baptist, which is the only unbeaten team left in league play. The Tornados, who are unbeaten at home but winless on the road, lead the ASC in several categories, including scoring offense (87.6 ppg). Sophomore
Darien Harris continues to pace the Tornados, averaging 12.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game through five contests. His rebounding mark ranks second in the conference.
Tayler Jacobs has quarterbacked the offense and ranks second in the league in assists per game (4.0) in addition to accounting for 9.4 points. After missing the first two games,
Collin Perkins has contributed 9.7 points and 3.3 blocks over the last three.
The Louisiana men (3-4, ASC 2-2) appear to be better than expected after being tabbed to finish seventh among seven schools in the ASC East Division Preseason Poll. The hot hand right now is junior post Korey Salmon, who was tabbed the league's East Division player of the week after registering a pair of double-doubles. He averages 8.9 points and leads the squad with 7.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per contest.Junior guards Jarrod Jackson (16.9 pg) and JeLani Mitchell (11.4 pg) as well as senior post Chukwuma Ekeh (11.1 pg) all score in double figures.
The Mississippi men (4-2, ASC 3-1) were tabbed second in the ASC East Division Preseason Poll. The squad, which eliminated the Tornados from the ASC Tournament in the first round the last two seasons, is led by forward Ken Black. The senior averages 13.7 points and 6.3 rebounds, which are both team bests, and has scored at a 20.5 clip over the last two games. Greg Pulliam, a junior guard, adds 10.2 points per contest, while floor general Kelvin Lester averages 2.5 assists.
