BOX SCORE
Belton, Texas –
Shamika Singleton registered her fourth double-double of the season, but the Concordia University women's basketball team suffered a 60-51 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Monday, Jan. 3 at the Mayborn Campus Center.
Mary Hardin-Baylor (7-3, ASC 4-2) got four straight points from Lindsay Eaton and quickly took an 8-2 lead, but the Tornados scored the next five and closed within one on a Singleton free throw at the 13:07 mark of the first half. The Cru responded with a 7-2 run to take a 15-9 advantage courtesy of two Landie Thompson free throws before the Tornados fought back again and trimmed the deficit to two on a good jumper by
Alex O'Neal. But Brandy Dittert made a trey and a layup to close out the half, giving her team a 22-15 lead through 20 minutes.
Concordia, which was competitive the entire way and never trailed by double figures, attempted to rally in the second stanza and was able to tie the score at 30-all on a layup in transition by
Kaleigh Landry. Sparked by a 3-pointer by Caitlin Barganier, the Cru scored the next eight points and never looked back. Jenny Black, Dittert and Brittany Zamora all made a pair of free throws down the stretch to produce the final outcome.
Singleton, who averaged 22.5 points at the CTX Holiday Classic last week, stayed hot and led Concordia with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Margaret Milling added nine points, three assists and a pair of steals off the bench. The Crue got strong contributions from Eaton and Zamora. Eaton posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards, while Zamora finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Concordia (3-6, ASC 2-4) opens a three-game homestand on Thursday, Jan. 6 when it hosts Texas-Dallas at 5:30 p.m.
