BOX SCORE
Kerrville, Texas –
Shamika Singleton scored 16 points on 8-for-12 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a convincing 65-42 road victory over Schreiner on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Edington Center. The Tornados, who had a 33-18 scoring advantage in bench points, led from wire-to-wire and set a program record by winning their fifth American Southwest Conference game in a row.
Concordia (8-6, ASC 7-4), which matched last year's win total in conference play with the victory, raced to an 11-3 lead by the first media timeout. Four players scored during the early offensive outburst, which was capped
Alex O'Neal's three-point field goal. Singleton hit three consecutive field goals later in the period to extend the Tornado lead to 25-15.
Deja Thomas later drained a long two to make it a 32-17 with a minute remaining before Samantha Rawlinson's putback created the 32-19 halftime score.
Schreiner (4-10, ASC 2-8), which nearly pulled out an upset on the road against Mary Hardin-Baylor in a 57-55 decision two days ago, fought back in the second half and cut the Tornado advantage down to single digits. A Kristy Guerra jumper made it 38-29 with 15:18 left.
Concordia, however, turned it on defensively and broke the game open by scoring 18 of the next 21 points over the next 7:36 while holding the Mountaineers to only one field goal. Sparked by the bench, a total of six Tornado players scored during the run, as
Skylar Lott finished a pass from
Dominique Mayberry to put the Tornados ahead by a 56-32 score with 7:52 left and in cruise control for the rest of the way.
In addition to Singleton, who fell just shy of her sixth double-double of the season despite seeing just 23 minutes of floor time, Concordia's balanced effort was also paced by
Margaret Milling, Lott and O'Neal. Lott registered nine points and seven rebounds, while O'Neal had seven points and three assists. Milling, who continues to lead the ASC in steals per game, had four swipes to go along with four points. Guerra scored 12 points and added five assists for Schreiner, but the Tornado defense also forced the point guard to commit 15 turnovers. Olivia Swarner finished with eight points and six boards.
Concordia, which ended the day tied for second in the West Division and only half a game behind first-place Hardin-Simmons, will look to add to its program record for consecutive ASC wins beginning on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m. when it hosts McMurry for Adopt a Tornado Night.
