Austin, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's and women's basketball teams will resume American Southwest Conference action with an away doubleheader at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Monday, Jan. 3. The women's game is slated to start at 5:30 p.m. before the men tip off at approximately 7:30 p.m. Forever Video Productions is slated to webcast both contests.
The Concordia women's team (3-5, ASC 2-3) split its games at the CTX Holiday Classic last week, defeating Goucher, 63-50, before falling to Coe by a 69-67 score. The squad has dropped three of its past four contests, but all of the losses came to teams who are either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls. Center
Shamika Singleton averaged 22.5 points in the tournament and is among a plethora of junior transfers who continue to lead the squad, accounting for 15.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 0.5 blocked shots. All three marks are team highs, while she is also tied for second on the team in steals (2.3 pg) behind sophomore guard
Margaret Milling (2.4 pg). Forward
Tiesha Martin is coming off a double-double effort against Coe and contributes 6.6 points, 7.6 boards and almost two assists and two steals per contest. Guard
Lashanda Luckey registered a pair of 13-point performances in the tournament and has emerged as an additional offensive weapon, while guard
Dominique Mayberry scores at a 9.9 clip.
Like the women, the Concordia men's squad (5-4, ASC 3-2) split its CTX Holiday Classic contests by earning a 73-60 come-from-behind victory over Beloit after coming up short against Wisconsin-Platteville, 84-76, two days earlier. The team is currently in a position to clinch one of the four playoff spots in the ASC West Division. Senior forward
Justin Reefer has stepped up his game and averaged a double-double in the tournament, contributing 12.5 points and 10.0 rebounds along with 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per contest. He now averages 6.0 points and 6.6 boards for the year. Sophomore guard
Tayler Jacobs, who like Reefer had a double-double in the Beloit win, scores at an 11.4 clip and dishes out 4.2 assists per game.
Nick Haynes, another sophomore guard, averages a team-best 13.0 points and has canned 16 shots from downtown, while
Darien Harris has registered 9.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per contest. Senior
Collin Perkins and junior
Josh Johnson have combined for over half of the team's blocked shots this year.
The Mary Hardin-Baylor women (6-3, ASC 3-2), who were picked to win the ASC West Division, have played the same five league opponents as Concordia and are looking to end a two-game slide after dropping decisions to Mississippi College, 57-52, and Louisiana College, 71-60, a few weeks ago. Lindsay Eaton, a senior forward who made the all-conference first team last year, leads the Cru and nearly averages a double-double with 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest. Junior guard Brittany Zamora and senior forward Landie Thompson also score in double figures, averaging 11.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, respectively. Zamora also accounts for 3.3 assists per game, while Thompson registers 1.0 blocks per contest. Both marks are team bests.
Overseen by Ken DeWeese, who has been voted the ASC West Division Coach of the Year the last four years, the Mary Hardin-Baylor men's squad (8-1, ASC 4-1) was picked to win the ASC West Division ahead of Concordia after winning the tournament title to earn the league's automatic bid to NCAA Tournament last season. The Cru have advanced to NCAAs three times in the last four years and enter Monday night's tilt on a six-game winning streak. Robert Moore, a sophomore forward, leads four players who average double-digit points, scoring at a 15.6 clip so far this season. Junior guards Sterling Phillips and Marlon Miller average 11.6 and 11.5 points, respectively, while Phillips also adds a team-best 3.4 assists per contest. Senior guard Dean Pele, an all-conference second team pick last season, accounts for 10.3 points and 5.1 boards.
