The Concordia men (14-9, ASC 12-7) qualified for the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the fifth straight season after defeating Hardin-Simmons by a 98-91 decision last Saturday, registering their first road victory over the Cowboys in nine years. Stan Bonewitz's squad, which is currently fourth in the standings and is looking to improve its seeding for the tournament, still easily leads the league and is second nationally in scoring offense (93.3 ppg). Sophomore Tayler Jacobs is the Tornados' leading scorer (15.4 pg) while continuing to rank first on the team and third in the league in assists (4.3 pg). Nick Haynes, a sophomore guard, is second on the team in points (11.7 pg) and is among the league's top 3-point shooters. Haynes, who averaged 17 points in two games last week, ranks second in the ASC for canning 42.6 percent of his shots from downtown. Josh Johnson ranks fourth in the league in blocked shots (1.5 pg) and scores at an 11.3 clip. Chris McOmber is coming off the best performance of his young career against Hardin-Simmons. The freshman, who had scored 33 points through the first 22 games, registered a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds in last Saturday's victory. He had 21 of those points in the second half, which included a stretch in which he ripped off 14 straight for the Tornados. Guards Kenny Williams and Darius Anderson have continued to be sparks off the bench while adding depth to the lineup. Williams has posted five assists and only one turnover in each of the last two games, while Anderson has averaged 16.8 points over the last five contests. Connor Davenport, Collin Perkins, Jason Recendez and Justin Reefer will be making their final appearances at the Concordia Field House this week and will be recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the Schreiner contest.

After dropping two pivotal conference games in Abilene last week, Concordia's women's team (12-10, ASC 11-8) enters the final week of the regular season in a tie for fourth place, and the final playoff spot, with Mary Hardin-Baylor. Based on all of the possible scenarios and tiebreakers, the Tornados will likely need to get one more victory than the Cru during this final week of the regular season to earn their first ASC Tournament bid since 2005 due in large part to Mary Hardin-Baylor's 69-63 road victory over Hardin-Simmons last Thursday and Concordia's 63-60 loss to the same opponent two days later. Shamika Singleton, who has been named the ASC West Division Player of the Week three times and also landed on the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week on Feb. 8, continues to pace the squad. Despite being limited to just 6.5 points per game in Abilene last week, she is still second in the league in scoring (16.7 ppg) while ranking third in rebounding (9.5 pg) and steals (2.3 pg). The junior center also leads the Tornados with 0.6 blocks per contest. Guards Margaret Milling and Dominique Mayberry have been the biggest sparks off of the team's deep bench. Milling has been leading the league in steals since the beginning of January, averaging 3.0 per game. She also scores at a 6.3 clip. Mayberry ranks second on the squad in scoring after Singleton, netting 8.3 points per contest. The junior transfer has canned 18 3-pointers, which ranks second on the squad behind sophomore guard Brianna Smith, and is shooting 46.2 percent from downtown. Junior forward Tiesha Martin continues to fill up the box score, averaging 7.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.5 assists. Lashanda Luckey, another junior forward, adds 6.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, while junior guard Alex O'Neal dishes out 2.5 assists. Deja Thomas will make her final appearance at the Field House and be recognized for her contributions to the program after the Schreiner contest.

Texas Lutheran's men's team (10-12, ASC 9-10) was eliminated from playoff contention after dropping a 65-50 road contest to Sul Ross State last Saturday. The Bulldogs, who will be playing for fifth place in the West Division this week, are led by junior Isaac Williams. The forward leads the team in scoring (15.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 pg) and is tied for the team lead in steals per game (1.7 pg) with junior guard Jarell English. His rebounding mark ranks second in the ASC. Other team leaders include junior guard Michael Flores as well as senior guards Brad Howard and Malcolm Dotson. Flores is second on the team in scoring behind Williams, accounting for 9.9 points per game, and Howard is the team's shot blocker (0.5 pg) while scoring at a 7.2 clip. Dotson contributes 5.2 points and 2.8 assists per match.

Texas Lutheran's women's squad (8-15, ASC 7-12), which has been eliminated from playoff contention, most recently snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating Sul Ross State, 58-38, last Saturday. The team is locked in sixth in the standings for the rest of the year. Tamisha Timpson, a junior forward, has been leading the way for the Bulldogs this season. She is averaging 14.9 points, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals. All three marks are team highs. Juniors Rebecca Valdez and Kim Hagan also score in double figures, averaging 11.4 and 10.0 points per game, respectively, while Valdez has accounted for 18.5 points and 5.0 boards per contest over the past week and is the squad's top shot blocker (0.7 pg). Another notable contributor for the Bulldogs is Lynn Lumpkin-Boozer. The freshman forward brings down 9.0 rebounds per game, a mark which ranks fourth in the ASC, and scores at a 5.9 clip. Texas Lutheran wraps up its 2010-11 season on the road against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1:00 p.m.

The Schreiner women (5-18, ASC 3-16), who find themselves in seventh place in the ASC West, have been in a major slump since top-scorer Julissa Garrett, who averaged 12.2 points and 1.6 steals per game, left school after the fall semester. The team has dropped seven straight games, which included a 56-52 loss to Sul Ross State last weekend, and 10 of its last 11. Freshman forward Olivia Swarner has been the Mountaineers' top player since the departure of Garrett, averaging 8.1 points to go along with 5.4 boards and 0.6 blocks per contest. All three marks are team highs. The freshman post player has netted 14.0 points over the last two contests. Bailey Harris adds 7.6 points per game and has netted at least 15 in the last three contests. Other players making strong contributions include guards Kristy Guerra and Lia Phillips, who dish out 2.2 and 1.8 assists per game, respectively.

Even though they have been eliminated from playoff contention, Schreiner's men's squad (10-13, ASC 8-11) enters the final weekend of regular season play as winners of two straight games. The Mountaineers recorded double-digit road victories over Sul Ross State and Howard Payne last week. Guard Darren Smith has paced the team and averages 17.5 points, which ranks fourth in the league and first among freshmen. He also averages a conference-best 3.0 three-point field goals per game as well as 2.9 assists. Riley Battle, a senior forward, accounts for 17.1 points off the bench and has scored at a 26.3 clip over the last four games. Junior guard Tyrie Prince scores at a 12.1 clip and is third in the league with 2.1 steals per contest, while senior center Mitch Lawrence ranks first on the squad in blocked shots (0.8 pg).
