Austin, Texas – Shamika Singleton fell just shy of a double-double with 25 points and nine rebounds to lead the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team in a 96-48 rout against Sul Ross State on Thursday, Feb. 3 at the Concordia Field House. The Tornados ripped off 24 unanswered points in the middle of the game and got 48 bench points to register their eighth win in the last 10 games.
A 3-pointer by Nicole Murdock put Sul Ross State ahead by a 3-2 score in the opening minute, but a layup by Singleton followed by a layup and jumper by Dominique Mayberry gave the Tornados a lead they would never surrender the rest of the way. Jill Meyer finished a pass from Deja Thomas to give the Tornados their largest lead of the half at 40-22 with 3:58 left before a trifecta followed by two free throws by Murdock pulled the Lobos within 13.
Concordia, however, scored the next 24 points to put the game away. After Meyer put back a missed jumper by Mayberry to give the Tornados a 46-27 halftime lead, the hosts netted the first 18 points of the second half to take a commanding 64-27 advantage with 15:38 to play. Madalyn Lopez completed a conventional three-point play 16 seconds later for the Lobos' first points in more than eight minutes of action to end the Tornado run.
By getting contributions from everybody in the lineup on both ends of the floor, Concordia flirted with reaching the 100-point mark for the first time since defeating LeTourneau by a 104-66 score on Nov. 29, 2003 and built its lead up to 47 on five occasions. Christen McLee drove in for layups on consecutive possessions to give the Tornados an 88-41 advantage before the final media timeout, and Brianna Smith hit another layup to give the hosts a 90-43 lead. Concordia continued to go inside and got layups by Thomas and Julia Bellquist in the final minute to seal the convincing 48-point win.
Singleton netted her 25 points on 10-for-11 shooting to lead Concordia in the rout. She also had four steals. Mayberry netted 12 points off the bench for the second straight game and also dished out four assists, while Lashanda Luckey added 10 points and four helpers. Tynisha McDowell grabbed a career-best eight rebounds, including four offensive, and Kaleigh Landry, Margaret Milling and McLee all finished with six points off the bench.
Sul Ross State (0-20, ASC 0-16) was paced by Lopez, who finished with 17 points and four boards. Candace Pollard and Murdock netted 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Pollard also added three assists and three steals in the Lobos' 26th straight loss dating back to last season.
Concordia (11-8, ASC 10-6) will host Howard Payne in a pivotal ASC matchup on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 3:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets, who defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor by a 66-61 score earlier tonight, are in second place and just one game ahead of the Tornados in the West Division standings.
